“You’re so pretty! What are you mixed with?”

The question I, a 19 year old black female (in NY of all places), always get when someone finds me attractive. As If I HAVE to be mixed…

I hear that so often. Like “Wow, that girl is so pretty she must have some Indian in her!” It’s preposterous. People have told me time and time again mostly when I was younger that “I’m pretty for a black girl”. When I was little I didn’t really understand the severity of their remarks because it was masked with a compliment. It hurts to think that people actually think that way and to know that they are so blind to the pure concept of beauty.
